Craft Hoarders Anonymous Challenge #9

Happy June! {seriously, June already???} I am sharing my project for Challenge #9 at the Craft Hoarders Anonymous Challenge Blog! Remember, you have two weeks to play in the new challenge! Challenge #9 closes June 15th at midnight PT.

Challenge #9 Fold It!
Use some sort of "fun fold" on your project. You can make a fun fold card, a pop-up card, an explosion box, or other type of project that makes use of folded cardstock or paper. You can share some folding techniques that are perfect for scrapbook layouts or mixed media pieces. Create a mini album with a folded binding. Fold some ribbon to make pleats. De-hoard those supplies and show us your folds....paper folds that is!

The sponsors this month are WorldWin Papers and Stencil Girl. The Design Team got some wonderful papers and stencils to play with!

I made a really cute box with an accordion mini album inside! The little album is 3 x 6 inches, and the box slightly larger. I had a lot of fun with the Fold It challenge! And as always, I used more of the vast hoard that my family calls "Gloria's Craft Emporium."

Here is what the mini looks like, all stretched out. I decorated the front and the back, so eight panels total. I turned this into a birthday card, and the mini also has two gift card holders! I plan to slip a few gift cards into it for a special friend.

You can see the second gift card holder on the back. This mini has lots of pockets, too.

I created the box from WorldWin cardstock, using the We R Memory Keepers Envelope Punch Board. Once I had the dimensions figured out, the project was pretty easy.

I started out with WorldWin Smooth Black cardstock. This is a 90# cardstock, and perfect for creating the box. I used the Stencil Girl Stitch a Doily stencil and some spray mist to make a pattern on the cardstock. I allowed the design to be a bit blotchy and messy.

To make the box, allow the cardstock to dry completely. Trim the cardstock to 9 x 9 inches. Line one edge of the cardstock up with the 2 1/2 inch mark on the punch board, punch and score on the right "groove" of the punch board. Move the cardstock to the 4 inch mark, punch and score on the right again.

Rotate the paper to the left 90 degrees, line up the little tab on the punch board with the first score line, punch and score on the right as shown above. Slide the paper to the next score line, punch and score again on the right. Repeat this for the other two sides.

Trim the "tab" from each corner.

Round the four flaps. Your paper will look similar to this. Fold on all the score lines, and assemble the box using strong double-sided tape. (Note, you may have to trim the two wide "flaps" a bit where they cross over the back of the box.)

I decorated the outside of my box with a birthday message. I pulled some flowers and ribbons from my stash. The chipboard is a Graphic 45 item, that I found in my bin of G45. {OK, make that BINS of Graphic 45!}

Plus, I used a Spellbinders die template for the blue layer that I have had for months and have never used. It looks great with the WorldWin Double Mates cardstock. Double Mates is cardstock that has one color on the front and a contrasting color on the back. When I embossed the paper, you can see how the darker layer is peeking through. Very cool.

To keep the envelope closed, I added some chipboard circles with foam dots, and wrapped them with twine.

The mini accordion album folds up and slips right into the envelope.

I trimmed a bit of the misted cardstock for the inside of the flap, and also added some paper strips for extra decoration.

To make the accordion album, trim WorldWin Smooth Black cardstock to 6 x 12 inches. Score at 3, 6, and 9 inches. Then decorate each panel.

I used a combination of Graphic 45 A Ladies' Diary, Couture, and Typography papers for the project. I love mixing paper collections! It is like a puzzle to see which papers will look nice together.

I created a pocket on the third panel and stuffed it with some images. The back of each image is covered with WorldWin Smooth Natural cardstock. You can use each image for a journaling block or for a photo. I used more of the misted cardstock to make a gift card holder for the last panel. I used WorldWin Smoth Pale Blue and Natural cardstock for the little tag.

This side of the mini has two pockets filled with images and journaling blocks. I used more of the misted cardstock to make a gift card holder for the second panel on this side. The stencil made an amazing pattern! I sprayed with white mist, in a heavy layer, and allowed it to dry.

I know that the lucky birthday girl is going to love this project! Especially if I put a few fabbie gift cards into the little pockets! Thanks for joining me today!

  8. Your projects always leave me breathless.(Still can't believe that your current output is less than what it used to be!)

There is such an amazing cohesiveness in your complex projects. With all the parts and techniques, I would flounder. I know this is totally piggy of me to ask, because your tutorials are the very best, but I would love to know how you approach a project. For instance, do you decide the size and mechanics for a project, then pick papers, or vise versa? Then, with all of the supplies, do you do all your painting, cutting images etc., and put things away as you go? Do you get out all the items you want to use and work them in, or get a base created and proceed with the embellishing, one item at a time?

These may seem like arbitrary questions for a creative process, but I would love to take my creative work to a more complex level without drowning in the process.

As I said, this is truly piggy of me to ask, in light of the time you spend so generously sharing. You may already know that this kind of information will have no effect on my efforts. (I may not have the artistic aptitude, if I haven't gone there myself already.)

Finally, this is a thought for future posts (even for a simpler project than this book). This comment does not need a response from you. You are already more than generous with your time. But, if you have already done this in the past, I would love a head's up as to where I could track this down.

Can't say it often enough, thank yo for all you do. You are a true muse for me.

  13. Stunning box, love all the details. I don't have this punch board from WR, guess that is next on my list to get, lol. Love the folded mini that you were able to create to place inside, so my question is did the mini come first or the box, hee, hee, hee. Fabulous as always Gloria.

  15. I've seen your name out and about in the paper crafting community and am glad I found your blog... This mini is exactly the idea I needed to make a momento of our week at the beach for two of my daughters and my two granddaughters with my G45 papers from the By the Sea collection. The whole project has pulled together so nicely with your help! Obviously, I love it!!
