Challenge #13 Let's Cycle...Up-Cycle That Is!

Being frugal and going green is what it's all about. Show us how you can up-cycle something using "junk" from your hoard. Most craft hoarders also hoard boxes, tins, packaging, and bits of this and that. Our mantra is, "I can MAKE something with that!" Now is your chance! Up-cycle!

The Design Team sponsors this month are Canvas Corp and Altered Pages! Both companies sent the Hoarders team some great stuff to work with! Plus, I am the guest blogger on the Altered Pages blog tomorrow, with another BRAND NEW project! Now, come and see my up-cycle project!

I created a fun, fall-themed wall hanging using a digital image from Altered Pages and lots of yummy items from Canvas Corp! Can you guess what I up-cycled? If you guessed a frame you'd be wrong! It's a...

...chalkboard! I purchased a stack of 6 3/4 x 8 1/2 inch chalkboards a few years ago at a teacher supply store. I am not sure why, other than I "needed" them! This one has a few places where some adhesive or something got onto the chalkboard part. I could not get the spots off, making it sort of useless as a chalkboard!

So...I decided to up-cycle it into a wall hanging!

I painted the wood frame with black paint, and then I added a layer of crackle medium, and then a layer of white paint. As always, my crackle did not crackle very well on all the areas. But, it was enough to get the effect I wanted.

I painted the wood letter with Tattered Angels Light Gold High Impact Mixed Media Paint. This stuff is AMAZING. It is very thin, so I painted it on with a foam brush. The result is a very shimmery coating, but the wood grain still shows through!

I covered the chalkboard with Canvas Corp Damask Printed Canvas. I simply added double-sided adhesive to the chalkboard and pressed the canvas in place. I trimmed it to size with a craft knife.

The images is a digital image from Altered Pages, called Fairy Dolls. I loaded the image sheet into Photoshop Elements 11 and then re-sized this particular image to approximately 3 1/2 x 5 inches. I printed it onto off-white cardstock using an Epson photo printer. I love it! So vintage and fun! I matted the image with Canvas Corp Black on Ivory Cardstock.

My next up-cycled item is the large, Canvas Corp Ivory Burlap Flower. This was a product that I saw at winter CHA. I did the make-n-take project at the Beacon Adhesives booth, and they gave me several of these large flowers from Canvas Corp. I had used them to decorate a felt bag. Well, this one came off (I think a kitten may have helped it along!) and was just sitting on my desk for the past six months. So, I reused it for this project!

I used Tattered Angles mists to color the Canvas Corp Canvas Fringe. I used Apple and Harvest Orange.

I poked around in my hoard and found some fall-themed stems, flowers, and leaves to finish off the project. I have bins and bins of flowers and still, I am sure I "need" more!

I cannot wait to display this project for fall. I hope I inspired you to up-cycle something! Thanks for visiting!

  15. I love everything you did with this piece - starting with the choice of central image - what a joyous and playful piece of whimsey! I love it! I really like that you used a chalk board in such an unorthodox way - and your attention to all the details and embellishments was spot on. This is the kind of piece of work I love to hang in my studio for inspiration - so glad I made the li'l journey over to see it!
