The Great Glue Debate!

I have had a love/hate relationship with glue ever since First Grade, when the art teacher plopped a big glob of paste in front of me! I hated that stuff! I am sure it came in this container! (Not really. It came in a large, plastic jar.)

Today, you can't find paste. I did find this small jar of Elmer's Washable School Paste, but every site was "out of stock." Too bad...not! This stuff never held anything together. Remember trying to glue things with it? The project would come unglued before art class was over. Or, halfway to the bus, the glue would let go and then your project would fall into a puddle! (Don't give me that look. You know it happened to you!)

But I think schools buy glue these days...  Check it out! It says "new stronger formula!" Hooorah!

We homeschool, so the kids use whatever adhesive I have on hand. I am always searching for that perfect adhesive. But, the glue is winning! On my desk, in my tool bag, and in the drawer of my desk are the following:

Hot glue gun
Two 3M ATG dispensers (yes, two! I want holsters for them!)
Thermoweb Zots - small and large
Masking tape
Scotch tape
Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L - foam squares in two sizes
Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L - EZ Runner tape runner
3M foam tape - large roll from the hardware store
Glue Dots - Craft and mini sizes, plus a Dot n Go dispenser, and 3D dots
Scor Tape in two sizes - 1/8 and 1/4 inches
Aleene's Tacky Glue
White glue - this is from my LSS and I am not sure the brand. They bottle it with the store name.
Hampton Art Glue Gloss
Hampton Art glue pad
Beacon - Zip Dry and Fabri-tac
Ranger Glossy Accents
Zig Memory System 2-Way Glue
Tombow Glue Pen
Tombow Mono Adhesive Runner - permanent and vellum
Elmer's Dot Runner, plus some Elmer's brand adhesive dots
Copic Xpress It tape
Glubers - several sizes
Red Line Tape
Glue Glider foam squares

That is what is handy. I have another bin of adhesive in the closet, plus I have three sizes of Xyron! And I have refills of all my favorites! I also have a bin of...."not loving this glue so much but cannot toss it out"! And a bin that I gave to the kids to use!

I need an adhesive intervention!

  3. What kind of adhesive do you use most often? And what do you use for heavy/lumpy embellishments?? I *only* have a shoebox full of adhesives myself ;)

  4. I hear ya! It's the never-ending quest for the perfect adhesive. For a while, I was loving Scotch glue sticks. Cheap at Sam's and they really worked. But they changed their formula, and the glue released after the project dried. I love their quick dry liquid adhesive because it had a tiny little opening, and gave you great control. But they changed that, and now I don't like it anymore. Currently, I'm "stuck" on Aleene's tacky glue, red line tape, and Pioneer glue sticks. I find tape runner too expensive to use.

  6. I have a nice collection too - but your post reminded me of the rubber cement we used in school - would brush it on our desk, let it dry & roll it into a ball! I'm sure the fumes were toxic.
