Graphic 45 Calendar Folio Series - October

Hello, Crafters! I am back with the October Folios! I am excited about this set of folios, and I hope that you are, too!

Each month, on (or shorty after) the third Sunday of the month, I will release the tutorials for TWO (2) folios. I will have November and December coming in the next two months. Then, I will release the summer folios (June, July, August) in January 2018.
The October Folios are all decorated in a vintage Halloween theme, suitable for photos of your children in their costumes, harvest parties, and so forth. This version of Halloween, is of sweet, vintage images and harvest events, rather than spooky, scary themes!

We are continuing to use the Graphic 45 Children's Hour Collection for this month. We will use the 12x12, 8x8, and 6x6 pads, plus some of the other items from the collection. This month, we are also going to be using the  Place in Time Deluxe Collector's Edition (plus some of the original collection, since it is in my stash in abundance). We are also using Time to Flourish (which is retired, but you can still find it online). Graphic 45 has a new collection called Seasons, and we will be using the 12x12 Patterns and Solids pad this month. I have also added some of the retired collections Happy Haunting and An Eerie Tale. Sometimes these older collections may be found on Amazon or Ebay.

I have used black cardstock for the base. See the full supply list below.
The October folios consist of one calendar folio (8 1/4" x 8 1/4") and one scrapbook folio (8" x 8"). These folios hold AT LEAST twelve (12) photos. You can customize them for fewer or more photos, or for journaling, or to use as a planner.
The folios are the same basic construction as the all the other folios. To see the other tutorials, check the links at the end of the post.

Before getting started, I recommend cutting up ONE EACH of the Cut Apart and Collective sheets from the various paper collections. That way you will have all the images needed, as we will also use the prints on the reverse sides of most papers. (Note: I may have used more than 2 sheets of some of the paper, but if you cannot do that, substitute something else from the collections or something from your stash that coordinates.)

I also recommend the Ephemera card packs, if you can find them.

October Calendar Folio
The October Folio is side-fold folio, measuring 8 1/4" x 8 1/4" when closed. This theme is perfect for Halloween and fall memories. The orange, purple, and green color scheme carries throughout the project.
The folio opens with areas for photos and journaling. This month we are going to create two pockets, perfect for tags, calendar pages, and more! Let's get started!
Cut one sheet of black cardstock to 8 1/4" x 8 1/4". Cut a second sheet of black cardstock to 8 1/4" x 8 3/4". Score the second piece on the long side at 1/2" to make a second 8 1/4" x 8 1/4" panel. Fold and burnish the score line.
Attach the two sheets together to create a folio that is 8 1/4" tall and 16 1/2" wide. Make sure the fold is on the left-hand side of the folio, so that the folio opens like a book.
Create a pocket for the left inside page. Cut black cardstock to 7" x 7". Score at 1/2" from the left, right, and bottom edges. Fold on the score lines and add double-sided tape to the tabs. With the tabs folded inward, your piece will measure a 6 1/2" tall by 6" wide rectangle.

With tabs folded, measure in 4" from the upper left corner and make a mark. Measure up 3" from the bottom right corner and make a mark. Draw a line connecting the two marks. Cut this section from the pocket. With the tabs folded, your piece will look like the photo above.
This view shows the back of the pocket. The tabs have adhesive attached.
To help with cutting your decorative paper for the pocket, we will create a template. Place the pocket, with tabs folded, onto a scrap of paper. Use a pencil to trace the shape of the pocket. Cut out the shape. Then, cut a little off each edge of the shape, making it slightly smaller than the pocket. Use this paper template to aid  you in cutting your decorative paper for the pocket. Save this template for the future projects.
Before placing the pocket onto the left page, as shown above, you need to first cover the inside of the folio page. Cut Time to Flourish October Flourish (reverse) paper to 8 1/8" x 8 1/8" and attach to the left page of the folio. Attach the pocket to the page as shown.

Let's create a pocket for the right-hand page.
Cut black cardstock 5 1/4" x 9 1/4". Score at 1/2" from the left, right, and bottom edges. Fold on the score lines and add double-sided tape to the tabs. If desired, trim the tabs at an angle, as shown.
Attach the pocket to the right-hand page.

Now, close the folio, making sure the fold is on the left side. Now, let's decorate! We will start with the front cover.

I originally created the cover of this folio last year, and it was one of the reasons I decided to embark on this folio series. I saved the piece and used it here for the October Folio. (I forgot to take step-by-step photos of the cover process, so I hope you can follow along with the written directions.)

First attach the Children's Hour 8x8 October Calendar page to the front of the folio. Trim the postage strip from Children's Hour October Collective paper and attach it to the left side of the calendar.

Using a die cut template, trim two doily shapes from ivory cardstock. Attach one doily to the upper center of the calendar just below the days of the week strip, centering between "Monday" and "Thursday." (This doily is mostly covered by the other elements on the  page.)

Place the second doily at the bottom of the calendar page, centering between "Wednesday" and "Saturday." You will see just a bit showing below the main image.
Trim the little girl holding a pumpkin image from Time to Flourish October Cut Apart paper. Mat the image with black cardstock and use foam adhesive to attach the image to the right side of the page as shown, covering part of the doily shapes.
I used dies to create handmade flowers for my project, but you can use pre-made flowers if you wish. I cut all the elements from textured cardstock. Use purple and orange cardstock for the flowers and shades of green cardstock for the leaves. I also cut some leaves to match the blue in postage images. Glue the flowers and leaves to the page, as shown. (All flower and leaf dies are from Cheery Lynn, see the links below.)

Attach a chipboard spider (Happy Haunting) to the flower cluster.
Trim the "Trick or Treat" sentiment from Children's Hour October Collective paper and attach it to the left side of the focal image, as shown. Glue a chipboard pumpkin shape (Children's Hour) below the sentiment.

Use black ink to color a chipboard number "31" and attach it to the lower left corner of the focal image.
The cover is finished. Open the folio and we will work on the left-hand page.

You should have already attached the background paper and the pocket to this page. (Use Time to Flourish October Flourish (reverse) paper, cut to to 8 1/8" x 8 1/8" for the background.)

Using the template we made in the steps above, trim An Eerie Tale Enchantment paper to fit the pocket and attach. Trim the "Pumpkin Time" border strip from Place in Time October Cut Apart paper. Attach the border to the bottom of the pocket, trimming to size.
Use die cuts to cut two circles from Time to Flourish 6x6 Patterns and Solids paper (orange paper). Cut one circle 3" in diameter and the second circle 2 1/4". Mat both with black cardstock, cut slightly larger. Attach the circles to the pocket, as shown. Use foam adhesive to attach a pumpkin sticker (Children's Hour) to the orange circles, as shown.

Trim the October journaling strip from Place in Time October Cut Apart paper. Attach the strip to the upper right side of the page. Attach a button sticker from Place in Time (original collection) to black cardstock. Use a circle punch to punch out the button. Use foam adhesive to attach the button to the bottom center of the journaling strip.

Let's make some tags for our pocket!
Use two of the Graphic 45 Large Black Tags. (They come six per pack.) For one tag, trim 1" from the bottom edge. Round the bottom corners. For the second tag, trim 1 1/2" from the bottom edge, then round the corners.
Trim Seasons 12x12 Patterns and Solids (orange print) paper to 6 7/8" x 3 3/4". Round all four corners and attach the paper to the front of the longer tag. Attach a postage sticker (Children's Hour) to black cardstock, trim and attach with foam adhesive to the upper left of the tag.

Trim An Eerie Tale Abracadabra (pumpkin print) paper to 6 3/8" x 3 3/4". Round all four corners and attach the paper to the front of the shorter tag.
Trim Time to Flourish October Flourish paper to 6 7/8" x 3 3/4". Round all four corners and attach the paper to the back of the longer tag. Trim Children's Hour October Montage (reverse) purple print paper to 6 3/8" x 3 3/4". Round all four corners and attach the paper to the back of the shorter tag.
Place the tags into the pocket. Let's work on the right page.
Trim Children's Hour October Montage paper to 4"  x 8 1/8" and attach it above the pocket.

Trim An Eerie Tale Abracadabra (reverse) green diamond paper to 4 7/8" x 8 1/8" and attach it to the pocket. Trim the border strip from Place in Time October Cut Apart paper and attach it to the pocket as shown. Trim the "October" border from Children's Hour October Collective paper and attach it to the top center of the pocket.

Now, let's create some paper pretties to place into the pocket. We will make one calendar card and two tags for this pocket.
Trim black cardstock to 7 3/4" x 7 3/4". Trim the Time to Flourish 8x8 October Calendar page to 7 5/8" x 7 5/8" and attach it to the card.

Trim the "All Hallow's Eve" border strip from Time to Flourish October Cut Apart paper and attach it to the bottom of the calendar. Trim a postage image from Time to Flourish October Cut Apart paper and attach it to the top right corner of the calendar.

Use a G45 Large Black Tag for the longer tag. Trim 1 1/2" from the bottom of the tag and round the corners. Trim Place in Time October Cut Apart (reverse) paper to 6 3/8" x 3 3/4", using the orange stripe and black check part of the print. Round the corners and attach the paper to the tag front.

For the second tag, use a G45 Regular Black Tag. Cut Seasons 12x12 Patterns and Solids (orange print) paper to 4 13/16" x 3 1/16". Round all four corners and attach the paper to the front of the smaller tag.
Flip all three items over. Trim Children's Hour October Calendar (reverse) purple print paper to 7 5/8" x 7 5/8" and attach it to the back of the card.

Trim An Eerie Tale Abracadabra (reverse) green diamond paper to 6 3/8" x 3 3/4". Round the corners and attach the paper to the back of the longer tag.

For the second tag, trim Children's Hour October Montage paper to 4 13/16" x 3 1/16". Round all four corners and attach the paper to the back of the smaller tag.
Place the card and tags into the pocket. Close the folio and flip to to the back side.
Cut Children's Hour October Montage paper to 8 1/8" x 8 1/8" and attach it to the back panel.

The calendar folio is finished! Add photos and journaling, as desired.

October Scrapbook Folio
This matching October Scrapbook Folio measures 8" x 8" and is a top-folding folio, decorated inside and out. It is perfect for journaling, ephemera, and photos. Like the calendar folio, this project can be displayed on your desk or shelf during the month of October. We will continue to use the same color scheme and theme as the first folio, however the focus will be on the deep blues and oranges of the collections.
The inside of the folio contains four flaps and a two pockets. The pockets are stuffed with fun tags and photo mats. Everything is decorated in a vintage Halloween theme.

We will construct the base for the folio first, and then decorate it.
Cut one piece of black cardstock to 8" x 8". Cut a second piece of black cardstock to 8 1/2" x 8" and score 1/2" from the top edge. Fold and burnish on the score line. Add double-sided tape to the tab. Attach the tab to the top of the 8" x 8" piece of cardstock, creating a top-fold folio, 8" x 8". Open the folio. It is 16" tall and 8" wide.
Cut a piece of black cardstock to 4 1/8" x 6 5/8". Score 1/2" from the right edge. Attach the scored tab to the top left panel of the folio. Place the flap 1" from the top edge. The flap will be 4 1/8" x 6 1/8".

Cut black cardstock to 4 1/8" x 4 5/8". Score 1/2" from the left edge. Attach the scored tab to the top left panel of the folio. Place the flap 3" from the top edge. The flap will be 4 1/8" x 4 1/8".
Now, we will create a pocket for the upper panel. (Sorry, mine looks a bit worse for wear!) Cut black  cardstock to 3 1/2" x 9". Score at 1/2" from the right, left, and bottom edges. Add double-sided adhesive to the tabs. (Note: I cut an angled bit off the ends of the tabs, where they meet, to decrease the bulk at the bottom edge of the pocket.)

Attach the pocket to the bottom edge of the upper panel, just above the fold.
Cut a piece of black cardstock to 6 1/8" x 4 5/8". Score 1/2" from the right edge. Attach the scored tab to the bottom left panel of the folio. Place the flap 1" below the fold. The flap will be 6 1/8" x 4 1/8".

Cut a piece of black cardstock to 4 1/8" x 6 5/8". Score 1/2" from the left edge. Attach the scored tab to the bottom right panel of the folio. Place the flap 1 3/4" below the fold. The flap will be 4 1/8" x 6 1/8".

Let's create a pocket for the bottom page.
Cut black cardstock 5 1/2" x 9". Score at 1/2" from the left, right, and bottom edges. Fold on the score lines and add double-sided tape to the tabs. If desired, trim the tabs at an angle, as shown.
Attach the pocket to the bottom edge of the page.

Fold all the flaps closed, and then close the folio. We will work on the front cover next.
Make sure your main fold is at the TOP of the folio! We will now decorate the front cover. Cut Happy Haunting Jolly Jack-O-Lantern (reverse) stars paper to 7 7/8" x 7 7/8". Attach the paper to the front of the folio.

Cut An Eerie Tale Grand Illusion paper to 7 7/8" x 4". Mat with black cardstock cut to 7 7/8" x 4 1/8". Attach this panel to the left side of the folio, approximately 1/2" from the left edge.

Use a drippy goo border punch to punch a strip of black cardstock. Trim to 7 7/8" long. Cut the pumpkin border from Children's Hour October Collective paper to 7 7/8" long. Affix the punched border to the bottom of the border strip. Place the border at the top edge of the panel.
Glue a chipboard "Halloween Greetings" tab (Happy Haunting) to the right side of the border, as shown.
Select the October ephemera card from the Children's Hour ephemera pack (or trim the image from Children's Hour October Collective paper).

Mat the image with orange paper and black cardstock, making each layer slightly larger, as shown. (The orange paper is from Time to Flourish 6x6 Patterns and Solids paper.) Attach the image to the right side of the folio, approximately 1 1/2" from the top edge and 1/2" from the right edge.
Use foam adhesive to attach the "Pumpkin Time" and "Halloween" sentiments, cut from the Time to Flourish October Cut Apart and Place in Time October Cut Apart papers, to the left side of the image, as shown.

Tie a loopy bow from orange and yellow gingham ribbon and glue to the left edge of the image. Tie a second bow from dark blue silk ribbon and attach as shown. Attach a pumpkin sticker (Place in Time) to the top of the bows.

We will work on the inside panels next.
First, we will decorate the top, inside panel, the two flaps, and the pocket.
Open both top flaps. We will work on the top base first. Trim Happy Haunting Trick or Treat paper to 5 1/4" x 7 7/8" and attach it to the top portion of the panel, tucking the bottom edge into the pocket. Trim An Eerie Tale Grand Illusion paper to 2 7/8" x 7 7/8" and attach it to the pocket.

Trim the October title from the Children's Hour 12x12 Calendar Pad to approximately 1 7/8" x 7" and mat with black cardstock cut slightly larger. Attach the title to the center of the pocket.

Let's decorate the flaps, and then make some items for inside the pocket.

Start with the left-hand flap. Attach the Time to Flourish October ephemera card to the panel.

To decorate the right-hand flap, trim out the poem from Time to Flourish October Cut Apart paper. Mat the poem with blue paper (Seasons 12x12 Patterns and Solids pad) and purple paper (Time to Flourish 6x6 Patterns and Solids Pad), respectively. Attach the poem to the flap as shown.

Now, let's make some goodies for our pocket!
We are going to make a large photo mat, two ephemera cards, and a square tag to tuck into our pocket.
Cut black cardstock to 6" x 7 3/4". Cut Place in Time October Cut Apart (reverse) paper to 5 7/8" x 7 5/8" and attach it to the black cardstock. See the sample above to determine which part of the pattern you should use.

Cut two pieces of black cardstock to 6 1/8" x 4 1/8". Cut the "October" ephemera card from Time to Flourish October Cut Apart paper paper to 6" x 4" and attach to one of the pieces of cardstock.

Cut the "Magical" ephemera card from An Eerie Tale Fanciful Fable paper to 4" x 6" and attach it to the second piece of black cardstock.

To create the tag element, use a Graphic 45 black square tag. Cut An Eerie Tale Abracadabra (green diamond) paper to 4 1/8" x 4 3/8" and round all four corners. Attach the paper to the front of the tag.

Flip all the pieces over to the back. For the large photo mat, cut Children's Hour 8x8 October Montage paper to 5 7/8" x 7 5/8" and attach it to the back of the card.

Trim Children's Hour 12x12 October Montage paper to 6" x 4" and attach to the back of the "October" ephemera card.
Cut out a postage image from Place in Time October Cut Apart paper and use foam adhesive to attach it to the upper right corner of the card.

Trim An Eerie Tale Enchantment paper to 6" x 4" and attach to the back of the "Magical" ephemera card.

Trim Time to Flourish October Flourish (reverse) orange text print paper to 4 1/8" x 4 3/8" and round all four corners. Attach the paper to the back of the tag.

Place all your items into the pocket.
Close the right-hand flap. Trim Happy Haunting Jolly Jack-O-Lantern paper to 4" x 4", making sure you get as much of the image as possible. From the same paper, fussy cut the sunflower image. Line the fussy cut flower up with the main picture and glue to the left edge of the 4" x 4" panel. Attach the panel to the flap.Close the left-hand flap. Trim An Eerie Tale Run and Hide (reverse) spiderweb paper to 4" x 6" and attach it to the flap. Trim out the postcard image from Place in Time October Cut Apart paper and attach it to the center of the flap. From Children's Hour 8x8 October Collective paper, trim out the pumpkin postage stamp image and use foam adhesive to attach it to the upper left corner of the postcard.
Now, let's work on the bottom panel. Open both flaps so you can work on the center panel. Cut Seasons 12x12 Patterns and Solids orange print paper to 3" x 7 7/8" and attach the paper above the pocket.

Trim Time to Flourish 8x8 Calendar (reverse) to 4 7/8" x 7 7/8" and attach the paper to the pocket. Trim out the postcard tag image from Children's Hour October Collective paper and attach it to the bottom right corner of the pocket. Add a spider chipboard image (Happy Haunting) to the postcard tag.

Let's decorate the flaps. Attach the Children's Hour October ephemera card (reverse side) to the left-hand flap.

Trim the purple journal card from Children's Hour October Collective paper to 4" x 6" and attach it to the right-hand flap.

Now, let's make some items for our pocket!

We are going to make a large photo mat, a small photo mat, and a tag to tuck into the pocket.
