I used a 7Gypsies tray and stamps to create a tribute wall hanging of my father-in-law. Dad passed away June 2011 after a very short battle with liver cancer. He was gone so suddenly and is missed tremendously. Since my own dad passed in 1997, my father-in-law really took his job of being my "only dad" very seriously. He always made sure to tell me how important I was and how much he loved me. (He did NOT however, understand my paper crafting obsession!) {smile}
Dad was a very strong, and vibrant man, who loved life. I wanted to make a tray to celebrate him. We were "blessed beyond measure" to have him in our lives.
To make the tray: Trim 12 pieces of black cardstock to fit the openings of the tray, approximately 2 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches each. Use these pieces of cardstock as your canvas for each ATC configuration.
For ATC 1: Use black archival ink to stamp the eye chart from the 7Gypsies Eye Chart stamp set onto the burlap. Allow ink to dry, and then fray the edges of the burlap. Tie twine in a knot at the top of the burlap. Use fabric glue to adhere the burlap to the black cardstock. Ink chipboard letters with Mix'd Media Schoolhouse ink. Allow to dry and attach the letters to the bottom of the burlap. Adhere the ATC to the tray.
For ATC 2: Trim printed paper to slightly smaller than the
black cardstock. Attach the paper to the cardstock. Stamp "memories"
from the Time Pieces stamp set onto cream cardstock with black archival ink.
Trim and distress with antiquing ink. Attach to the bottom of the ATC. Cut
three stars from cork. Spray two stars with Crimson glimmer mist. Allow ink to
dry, then attach stars to the ATC; use foam tape to raise one of the stars.
Adhere the ATC to the tray.
For ATC 3: Attach a photo to the black cardstock and adhere to the tray.
For ATC 4: Trim corrugated paper to slightly
smaller than the black cardstock. Attach the paper to the cardstock. Stamp the World Travel Words stamp onto cream cardstock
with Schoolhouse pigment ink. Emboss with clear embossing powder. Trim to
slightly smaller than corrugated paper. Use an ink applicator tool to add
antiquing ink over the stamped image. Allow ink to dry. Wipe ink from the
embossed areas with a paper towel. Attach stamped and embossed image to
corrugated paper. Cut a heart from cork. Spray with Crimson glimmer
mist. Allow ink to dry, and then attach heart to the ATC. Tie floss to a button
and using an adhesive dot, attach the button to the heart. Adhere the ATC to
the tray.
For ATC 5: Attach a photo to the black cardstock and adhere
to the tray.
For ATC 6: Using Leather pigment ink, stamp Scala Stamp onto
the canvas. Allow ink to dry, and then fray the edges of the canvas. Use fabric
glue to adhere the canvas to the black cardstock. Adhere the ATC to the tray.
For ATC 7: Emboss cream cardstock with Distressed Stripes embossing folder. Apply leather pigment ink to raised areas and emboss with brown embossing powder. Trim embossed paper to slightly smaller than the black cardstock. Ink panel with antiquing ink and attach the paper to the cardstock. Stamp the text from the Vintage Bicycle stamp set onto cream cardstock with Dark Cashmere antiquing ink. Trim to size and use an ink applicator tool to add antiquing ink to the edges of the stamped image. Allow ink to dry. Stamp the pocket watch image from the Time Pieces stamp set onto the text with Mossy pigment ink. Emboss with clear embossing powder. Roll and distress the edges of the panel, and adhere to the embossed paper. Glue the ATC to the tray
For ATC 8: Trim printed paper to slightly smaller than the
black cardstock. Attach the paper to the cardstock. Stamp Distressed Words
image onto cream cardstock with Dark Cashmere antiquing ink. Trim and distress
with Mossy and Patina pigment ink. Allow ink to dry. Stamp clock from Time
Pieces stamp set over the text with Leather pigment ink. Emboss with clear
embossing powder. Add a mini brad to the center of the clock. Trim and attach
to the printed paper. Cut a star from corrugated paper. Glue mini clothes pin
to the star and then attach star to the ATC with foam tape. Adhere the ATC to
the tray.
For ATC 9: Trim printed paper to slightly smaller than black
cardstock and attach. Stamp Blessed Beyond Measure onto cream cardstock with
Schoolhouse pigment ink. Emboss with clear embossing powder. Trim image to size
and distress with antiquing ink. Cut the stamped image in half. Adhere one-half
of the image to the printed paper and attach ATC to the tray.
For ATC 10: Trim printed paper to slightly smaller than black cardstock and attach. Adhere the other half of the stamped image to the printed paper, making sure to line it up to match ATC 9, and attach ATC to the tray.
For ATC 12: Attach a photo to the black cardstock and adhere
to the tray.

ReplyDeletebeautiful tribute to your FIL Gloria & how cool is it to see your work used in the Michael's ad - woohoo!
ReplyDeleteWonderful project! :o)
ReplyDeleteGloria, your post and project brought a smile and some tears. My dad passed in 2006 so your cooments made me think of him (the tears). I loved your comment about your father in law not understanding your obsession of papercrafting (the smile). I think all of us crafters can relate. I'm so grateful we all have each other and get to stay in touch with others who "get" it. Thank You for the inspiration and wonderful artwork.
ReplyDeletelovely tribute tray, G and the Michael's ad is very cool!
